Vertical tutoring mixes tutor groups in form time by age: tutor groups are typically made up of students from Years 7 to 11.
There is strong evidence from interviews with staff that when it is done well, vertical tutoring can reduce the workload of tutors; improve relationships; and increase support for students in most need. However, implementing vertical tutoring is challenging and requires patience and persistence.
The resource we have developed outlines the advantages and challenges associated with peer tutoring; how to introduce it; and when it goes wrong. It also explores the evidence that suggests it can be effective in supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
